AAA Honors Auto Repair Specialists in Freeport for Excellence
FREEPORT – Almost 25 years ago Dave Timm and his wife, Gina, entered a vacant building with a dirt floor and no running water and had a vision to own and operate their own auto repair business .
Dave Timm had been a mechanic since high school and was ready to become his own boss. Together, he and Gina opened Auto Repair Specialists in 1997.
This decision has earned them national recognition today.
As a member of AAA Automotive, the Freeport shop began to gain industry attention as a leading auto repair company. He had a chance to be recognized nationally after being named one of Illinois’ top three for 2021. He got that recognition Wednesday when AAA’s Nate Gustafson came to the workshop at 3358 Highway. 26 and presented the National Award for Best in Auto Repair for 2021. In addition to the plaque, he brought a trophy and gift cards for all employees.
“What we’re presenting to Dave and Gina is the Gold Award for Excellence,” said Gustafson. “Auto Repair Specialists are a member of AAA and what we look for in a business are those who engage with the members, deliver the quality of service, have the right image and we look at the store. The auto repair specialists met all the criteria and we took note of them. It is not something they asked for. We have noticed them … They make us proud of our service network.

Dave said he learned of the distinction a month ago. He said he was shocked but happy to know that a business he started on a dirt floor had become a sense of pride. His motto “If we can’t fix it, it’s not broken” is what has driven him to success over the past 24 years, he said.
“It comes down to honesty and trust with our customers,” Dave said. “It’s never a good thing when a car breaks down, and our job is to help fix the problem and leave them satisfied with a job well done. I always love helping people, and although things have changed so much over the years in auto repair, I still love what I do. I made the right decision looking at this vacant building.
Gina adds, “Our customers are like family, and now we’re starting to see second generation customers come through our door. We have to do something right. “
Gustafson said he was honored to make Aurora’s trip to present the awards to Dave and Gina, saying, “I see a lot of stores but when I see this store I see a team, and this award represents it. a large part Auto repair specialists are now known nationwide.
